A short history of the Starter jacket boom of the early 90s

Starter's story is a big part of why vintage team jackets carry the cultural weight they do today. Founded in New Haven, Connecticut in the early 1970s, the company built its business on officially licensed sports apparel — jackets, jerseys, and caps carrying real NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL branding.

From sideline gear to streetwear

By the late 1980s and into the early 1990s, Starter's satin and nylon pullover jackets had crossed over from sports merchandise into mainstream youth and hip-hop fashion. Team jackets became a genuine style statement well beyond stadiums, and Starter became one of the defining outerwear brands of the era.

Growth, oversaturation, and a fall

That popularity came with real costs. Rapid growth, licensing overhead, and a wave of counterfeit product eating into sales all contributed to financial strain, and the original Starter Corporation filed for bankruptcy in the late 1990s. The brand and its assets changed hands more than once in the years that followed, including a period of Nike ownership of parts of the brand, before later relaunches under different ownership groups.

Why it still matters to collectors

That turbulent history is part of why dating an original Starter piece matters so much to collectors — tag styles, manufacturing details, and branding all shifted across those ownership changes, and pieces from the genuine early-90s boom era are meaningfully different from later reissues carrying the same name. It's also exactly why we check tag era and construction details on every Starter piece before it gets listed.
